6 leather labels for jeans and denim garments. Each label has a small heart and text reading original, jeans, me made, denim, sewing, unique.

I have chosen a vegetable tanned cowhide in a natural colour which is 1.4-1.6mm thick (good for most domestic sewing machines). It smells divine! This material is very durable and labels in this leather will age well becoming slightly darker and more flexible over time.

What does vegetable tanned mean? Vegetable tanning is the method of transforming a hide into leather. It is called vegetable tanning because it uses natural tannins including bark, leaves and plants to tan the hide. This process can take up to 2 months and it is mainly done by hand.

Kangaroo leather (also vegetable tanned) is buttery soft and very lightweight making it easy for your home sewing machines to sew and a joy to work with.  This leather remains quite true to colour and softens up around the edges nicely.  Despite being 0.6-0.8mm thick, it is extremely strong – the strongest weight for weight leather available, with 10 times the tensile strength of cowhide and 50% stronger than goatskin.  Kangaroo leather is humanly culled and is a by-product of the meat industry.
